Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont, which is based on Stephen King's 1982 novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. It tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne, who despite his claims of innocence, was found guilty for the murders of his wife and her lover and sentenced to life imprisonment for which he was sent to the Shawshank State Penitentiary . Over the next two decades after being imprisoned there, he befriends some inmates, and is instrumental in a money-laundering operation led by prison warden Samuel Norton .
